Methods of Drug Administration in Pediatric PatientsNameInstitutional AffiliationMethods of Drug Administration in Pediatric PatientsPediatric patients are grouped according to ages which range from birth to adolescent. In pediatric patients, consideration for any drug administration must include overall diet status, the size of the patient, medical condition, and other prescribed products used. From those above, it is apparent that how drugs are administered to pediatric patients differ from adult patients. Most drugs administered to pediatric patients are done orally (Lam, Xu, Worsley, & Wong, 2014). The drugs administered orally are in the form of tablets, capsules or liquids. The method is preferred because it is one of the best ways to supply drugs to pediatric patients. That is so because infants and young children have a greater body surface relative to total body mass making absorption faster thus increasing the effectiveness of the drugs. However, the method is not effective in adults as they have smaller body surface compared to total body mass making absorption slower.Rectal administration of drugs is also used in the pediatric patient but under certain conditions. The method is applied when the patient is vomiting and is unable to take anything by mouth.
