Marijuana Incarceration Does Not Deter Marijuana Use in New OrleansName:Institutional affiliationAbstractMarijuana is by far the most consumed drug in America after Alcohol and tobacco. Dried parts of Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant are consumed through smoking, in food or drinks. On the streets, it is known by many names but weed is the most common. Marijuana was criminalized in the United States by the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, and currently listed among the Schedule 1 drugs by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) together with heroin, crystal methamphetamine, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ecstasy, methaqualone, and peyote. However, the circumstances surrounding the criminalization remain questionable. Previous research has indicated that marijuana is consumed equally among all races, but arrests target Black men. This research looks into the ethnic disparity in marijuana arrests and proposes alternative measures to control marijuana consumption. The research on 1000 youths in 3 universities in the Louisiana State found that 58.3% of students have consumed marijuana at least once in their lives.
