This regulation targeted the elimination of wage gaps between employees of different genders at similar organizational employment positions. However, this act can be overruled based on specific exceptions that allow an employer the right to justify pay variations. Therefore, based on seniority, merit of employees, work related experience, or responsibilities, employers can justify variations in wages. However, employers in violation of this act face the possibility of legal suits against their actions. Such suits are linked to fines that include the restoration of unpaid wages, or compensation for unpaid overtime. The employer may also be compelled to reinstate an employee and promote them where applicable (Johnson, 1974).
