Comparison between the Reasons and Needs for Using Nurse-Midwives in the United States and in AfghanistanMidwives usually play a significant role in introducing women to the health system and guaranteeing that together with their babies, these women get a continuum of skilled care during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the following days and weeks after birth (Wildman, 2010). It is rather unfortunate that millions of women give birth without the support of trained midwives. In some nations, midwives do not even have access to medical necessities that can save lives. In Afghanistan, most women have access to midwifery care during their pregnancy and childbirth. However, not all of them use such services. Additionally, most prefer giving birth at home as they do not feel confident with doing so at a health facility. Women in Afghanistan view pregnancy and childbirth as an inherent process that does not need external assistance (Wildman, 2010). Another reason why Afghanistan women prefer nurse-midwives is because of their cultural and religious practices. They believe that being a good Muslim is important during pregnancy as it is not considered appropriate to undress in front of a stranger or expose oneself to a health provider (Wildman, 2010).
