Cultural Model ApplicationAround the world, nurses are providing care to a more diverse patient population than ever before, making cultural competency in nursing a necessity. This has led to trans-cultural nursing which refers to healthcare delivery that is related to an individual’s culture, provided in a meaningful and safe environment (Albougami, Pounds & Alotaibi, 2017). It requires nurses to recognize and appreciate the cultural differences that exist in healthcare by having the necessary skills and knowledge in cultural competency. Transcultural models are important tools that guide nurses in knowing the cultural structures that exist in various societies (Karabudak, Arslan & Basbakkal, 2013). Examples of significant transcultural nursing models are Leininger Sunrise model, Giger and Davidhizar transcultural assessment model, Purnell model for cultural competence, and Campinha-Bacote model of cultural competence (Albougami, Pounds & Alotaibi, 2017). With relation to nursing practice, the Leininger Sunrise model can be used when nurses make cultural assessments of patients during healthcare delivery. This is because the model identifies a patient’s cultural values, religious customs, community practices, educational and economic backgrounds which are important in providing culturally integrated care (Sagar, 2012, p.3).
