Between 1979 and 1959, the state of California under its Eugenics Law compulsorily sterilized thousands of people in what appears to be a selective breeding policy. The policy aimed at removing the gene pool of people who were considered genetically inferior only ended in 1979. The objective of Eugenics Law was to eliminate the class of people tagged as substandard or unfit for society. Forced sterilization was therefore directed at people thought to be genetically unfit or defective in order to stop them from passing on their defects to the future generations. This group included people with physical disability and people thought to have intellectual disability such as low IQ score. The general population of people thought to be dangerous to public health were subjects of forced sterilization for this reason forced sterilisation was also a condition for release from some institutions such as prisons and mental hospitals (Stern, et al., 2017).
