Executive Summary
This report is an insight into my understanding ofthe ethnography,Righteous Dopefiend. The study was conducted on 20 homeless heroin addicts, and it used a methodology of social theories mixed with images to show the severity of the issue. The book attributes theories such as abuse and a connection between the home and drug use as the main culprits for drug use and homelessness. It also questionsthe role played by societal institutions in aggravating the issue. The aspects that I found most fascinating in the book werethe inter-relationships between the male homeless heroin users, the relationship between heroin and the users, theirrelationshipswith their friends and family, the racial and gender variations
a graphic way was bound to elicit reactions from the readers. Its use helped to set the scene quite vividly in the mind of the reader. From the camps, they lived in, to the detox centers where they were taken. Activities shown by the photos include how to prepare a dope, inject it, stealing things to sell and how they conducted their social life with each other. Conclusion
Burgois and Schonberg’s pictorial ethnography combines the use of theory and pictures to showcaseone of the most rampant issues affecting society, drug addiction. Their work is quite an addition to the cultural anthropology field, as it invokes questions in the mind of a reader as to what role society plays in drug addiction and homelessness. It delves into the repetitive pattern of abuse, its effects and the role it plays in drug use. The ingenuity displayed by the authors in captivating the individuality of the subjects while sharing their cumulative story is unrivaled. In ethnographies, it is easy to lump the people involved in one, but true participation allows the ethnographer to isolate individual aspects of the culture.
