Professors name Course title Date The Mystification of the Holocaust The Holocaust is the most remembered state sponsored killing that resulted in the death of over six million Jews in Germany by the Nazi regime. The term is derived from a Greek word holokauston which means, a burnt sacrifice offered to God, therefore delinking it from the normal human perpetrated brutalities. According to Yehuda Bauer, the most surprising facts about the Holocaust is that it is the greatest genocide in modern history, the killings were planned and executed by civilized individuals, and the bystanders did nothing to protect the Jewish population. However, Bauer maintains that the mystification of the events is a way of running away from the truth, and therefore missing the lessons that the Holocaust offers to the future mankind. Therefore, although the Holocaust cannot be fully explained, in terms of the motivation and the human suffering, it is possible to identify the conditions that favor such massive killings.
