The celebrated youth love that caused the lovers to “worn our bare feet bare” was no longer there. The husband had lost the plot of where this love began and despite all the memories that the wife tried to bring up, did not find any sense in the husband. He was as tough as hemp. Just like how the warmth of summer comes and goes, so was this lover’s relationship. Their love memories were short lived just like the summer season (Sexton 1). Actually, “the sun blew out of sight their love just like the “red picture hat.” The inclusion of sun in the poem is to signify the falling apart of the summer love.
