The whole language approach advocates for teaching children to read by recognizing words as complete whole pieces of language. It is thus believed that language must not be broken down into single letters and combination of letters for decoding. In this way, language becomes a complete structure of making sense and with all words jointly in relating to one other in context (Jonson, 2005). In relation to the Lexile measure, the focus turns on two main issues how difficult a text is or the student’s reading ability level. This study will then attempt to find out whether or not the whole language approach achieves desirable results in relation to Lexile measure. This happens after converting the reader’s results to a desirable Lexile measure.
