DiscussionsUnit 4: Language/StylePostIn the “lottery” by Shirley Jackson, the language used heightens the surprise at the end which in my opinion is horrifying. The lottery symbolizes an action that is passed down from one generation to the next. It’s told in third person making it seem a bit detached. The dialogue also goes to make it sound simple. In “sweat” the language style used is not as straight forward. The story which is set in the south making the language style used is a bit different. There is the use of slang that emphasizes the setting and the culture of the characters used. In “bad neighbors” the style used is fast paced. There is a lot of switching between the characters which was a bit confusing at times. The language used in this short story goes to show what the neighbors thought of the Benningtons. They thought that the Bennington’s did not fit into the neighborhood and the language used goes to emphasize this.
