This is evident even in history. It is used to identify a person or a group of people who are different from a segment of the society or even another individual. It is often encountered in situations where a description of one person or group of people is based on the prevailing definition of one (Rusk, 2012). An individual who cannot describe another as who he or she is, often employs the concept to portray the contrasting differences. To effectively use, a definition or identity has to be completely one sided. It is used to perpetuate exclusivity by identifying outsiders as others. Essential characteristics that are only shared by a certain group of people foster the exclusive bond between them. They then develop a sense of importance that trumps that of any other individual who doesn’t poses the same essential characteristics as they do.
