Gender Roles and InterpretationIn my opinion gender roles are acquired rather than biologically inherent an individual. Gender role behaviors are a result of socialization by society into either masculine or feminine roles. Therefore gender is an imposed social and cultural conformity with societal expectations. There is very limited role of genetics in the behavior of females and males if any apart from physical and biological characteristics that are purely genetic. This is an unconscious psychological process guided by the environment of societal beliefs. Parents are the principal socializing agents in shaping children’s values, beliefs and behaviors relating to gender. Parents socialize children into certain roles as dictated by their sex.
