Factors that Contribute to the Disparities within African American versus Other Racial Group in their Abilities to Purchase Real EstateValery LatourThomas Edison State UniversityRalph J. Argen III, JD, Ph.D.LIB-495-OL012August, 2019AbstractReal estate ownership among African Americans is significantly low. The property ownership among the African Americans is expected to decrease further due to the continued lack of economic opportunities. The major factor that has contributed to low property ownership among African Americans is the historical injustices. African Americans have faced a lot of injustices from the slavery era to civil rights era. Second factor is the education level. Many African Americans lack advanced education which would have helped in securing formal employment. Therefore due to low education level many African Americans are unemployed or are underemployed. Such situation limits their wealth and subsequently their ability to own real estate and other properties. Brokers also contribute by discriminating against the African American real estate buyers.
